The Role of Physical Education in Promoting Social Values and Emotional Intelligence Among Secondary School Students in Jordan: Teachers’ Perspectives

Abstract
The research aimed to identify the role of physical education in promoting social values and emotional intelligence among secondary school students in Jordan from the teachers’ perspective. Quantitative data were collected using a survey method. The questionnaire was distributed electronically via Google Forms in Arabic after translation. The research employed purposive sampling to target secondary school physical education teachers in Jordan which consisted of 300 physical education teachers. To analyze the quantitative collected data, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program, Version 29, was utilized. Teachers’ ratings of the role of physical education in promoting social values and emotional intelligence among secondary school students were very high, particularly regarding cooperation, interaction, communication, emotional management and coping with stress. The results reflect the importance of physical education in developing emotional intelligence, including coping with stress and managing emotions, and suggest that physical education’s contribution may be less significant in deeper cognitive aspects, such as emotional problem-solving and positive thinking, which may require appropriate planned and training interventions in this area. Therefore, the study recommends that policymakers reconsider how physical education classes are utilized and their duration to contribute to preparing students who are active and capable of positive communication and cooperation in various situations.
