Abstract
Sustainable development is a popular topic of discussion nowadays in seminars, conferences, discussion forums, etc. It is an important part of government practices, academic curricula, political agendas, global discussions, etc. Billions of rupees are expensed every year for promoting and maintaining sustainable development at the global level. Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, introduced the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission) in 2014 across the country as a part of sustainable development. The last Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), widely familiar as COP 29 in Baku, capital city of Azerbaijan, put a series of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urged member countries to follow the same. Achieving SDGs requires proper understanding of the concept of sustainable development at every level of society. This research paper focuses on the behavioural approaches and actions towards sustainable development of urbanites residing in the Rajpur Sonarpur municipality area in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The study was conducted on two groups – an educated group and a less educated group. Both groups of respondents showed agreement and disagreement across different dimensions of SDG awareness. Their responses have helped the researcher to understand the challenges preventing the SDGs from being met completely in that area.
