Developing Android-Based Multimedia to Improve Numeracy Literacy in Primary Education

Abstract
Numeracy literacy plays a crucial role in supporting students’ understanding of mathematical concepts and enhancing their learning processes. Despite its importance, field observations reveal that the development of students’ literacy and numeracy skills remains suboptimal. One contributing factor is the limited availability of effective and engaging learning media, which hampers teachers’ efforts to strengthen these competencies. This study aims to develop interactive Android-based multimedia for mathematics learning that integrates local cultural contexts to increase student engagement and improve numeracy outcomes. The research adopts a modified Borg and Gall development model, focusing on producing a valid and practical learning tool aligned with students’ needs. The study involved 148 elementary school students and 12 mathematics teachers in Central Java, Indonesia. Data was collected through questionnaires and tests and analyzed using descriptive methods. The findings indicate that the developed multimedia is valid, as confirmed by expert evaluations, and practical, based on positive feedback from both teachers and students. Furthermore, effectiveness testing showed a statistically significant improvement in students’ numeracy skills after utilizing the multimedia. These results suggest that incorporating cultural elements into interactive, Android-based learning media can be a powerful strategy to enhance numeracy literacy. The product offers a promising alternative for supporting mathematics instruction in elementary education and contributes to addressing the gaps in current educational practices.
